![]() ![]() With the new TransType 4, you can convert virtually any font format into other font formats. ![]() Fontographer 4.7.3 has one of the best interfaces ever developed for a Mac program, and I’m looking forward to Fontographer’s third decade. TransType (short: TrT) is a build machine for fonts. Macworld’s buying adviceįor nearly any font editing task you’d want to accomplish-from simple tweaks to creating your own from scratch-Fontographer is still, after 21 years, the quickest and most intuitive way to go. The most popular versions among the software users are SE 2.5.1 and 2.1. This program is an intellectual property of FontLab. We cannot confirm if there is a free download of this software available. Most manufacturers with restrictive licenses will let you edit their fonts if you let them know what you are doing and why. TransType 2.1 was available to download from the developers website when we last checked. Version 8 is a modern app that lets you create, open, extend, test and export font families, variable OpenType fonts, color fonts and web fonts for any Unicode writing system. FontLab has been the go-to app for professional typeface designers. FONTLAB TRANSTYPE FOR MACSo check before you edit, and, if necessary, get permission to edit the font from the manufacturer. FontLab 8 is an integrated font editor for Mac and Windows. Today, however, some font licenses are more restrictive. There is one thing to watch out for when using Fontographer to edit pre-existing fonts: ten years ago, most font manufacturers happily let you customize a font for your own or a client’s use, as long as you did not resell the font. The goal is to preserve Fontographer’s much-loved interface while avoiding Studio 5’s unfamiliar interface, steep learning curve, and un-Mac-like quirkiness. FontLab plans to extend Fontographer’s capabilities over the next year by blending its code with FontLab’s more advanced font editor, Studio 5. Users of the classic Fontographer 4 should find version 4.7.3 as bug-free and stable as ever. Fortunately, the transition to OS X-the company’s main objective with this new version-hasn’t introduced any new problems other than FontLab’s annoying reassignment of the Redo key combination from Command-Y to Shift-Command-Z. It converts them into PostScript for editing, and then converts them back into TrueType before it actually generates them.Īpart from being OS X-native, Fontographer 4.7.3 has no additional new features since its last major release.
